Expat advice.. thinking of Relocating to Brittany
Hi,
My name is Cecelle, I am from Cape Town South Africa. I am thinking of relocating in Brittany. I am a single 59yr old lady, divorced for 6 years and would like to sell up and move to Brittany.
I have a daughter working in the UK, so close enough to visit both ways.
I have dogs and cats and would like a to buy a house, with some yard space, love the country, love the sea, would like to live close to a small village with all the necessary day to day goodies.

I really would appreciate any suggestions, comments, that you may have. It would be really nice to choose an area with a few expats to communicate with. Think it helps with the relocation process.
If there are any ex South Africans, would love to chat to you too.

Are you able to pick up any English TV channels? I am going to have a good go at learning French, but I know I am lousy at languages, so going to be a battle from that aspect.

Many thanks in advance, Regards, Cecelle

Re: Expat advice.. thinking of Relocating to Brittany
If you're going to have visitors from UK etc. being near Dinan and St.Malo is a good idea. Plenty of ex pats here already and UK television is easy with plenty of people available to install a dish etc.

Good luck!

Re: Expat advice.. thinking of Relocating to Brittany
Hi Cecelle and Molly just found this forum.
We are relocating hopefully to the area you are suggesting.
At present we are in the south of Spain in a mountain village but it is very dry and after 4 years of 40+ in July and August and trying to save all our plants from dying on us, we have decided to make the move. We are in our 60s so quite a big step having to get to grips with another language again. Also the other thing will be the fact that it will be so much easier to hop over on the ferry to see the family and easier for them also.

Re: Expat advice.. thinking of Relocating to Brittany
Hi Maureen

You'll not have too many problems with plants dying from lack of water!! It's being a slightly wet summer..... that said when it's nice, it's wonderful! It's not too wet to go out into the garden and attack the brambles.... did I say garden, more like jungle at the moment.....

If your Spanish is any good you should find French much easier to pick up, there are lots of similarities and they say the 3rd language is easy to learn.... so they say...

Good Luck - Don't worry it doesn't always rain, but sometimes it feels like it does!

Molly

Re: Expat advice.. thinking of Relocating to Brittany
Hi

As far as I know the Notaire's bit is around 10% of the sale price of the property. This is if he's handling all of the sale and no agents are involved..... otherwise the Notaire will take about 5% and the agent 5% or more..... sometimes much more.... :o

Any TVA would only be due on the fees - not on the sale of the house - assuming it's an existing house and not a new build house, if it's a new build then for personal residence it should only be 5.5% TVA.
