healthcare in france
Hi,

My name is Billy and we are exploring the option of relocating to Brittany. I am generally researching most things, and am quite naive in any relocation matters. Can someone please update me on the French healthcare system, is it good and is it free ? I have a Wife and 3 kids ( aged 4 11 and 12 ).

thanks.

Re: healthcare in france
hi billy, wishing you well if you do come to this beautiful country ! quite a lot of people here are paying unnecessarily, we did for 10 years! the problem is that insurance companies will sign you up and take your money without even asking about what your annual income is, becasue once your signed up your tied quite tightly to them , cancellation is not easy, the best person i can recomend you talk to is isabelle chevalier, she is a court approved translator which we used on an unrelated matter, i happened to show her our yearly bill from the insurance top up for medical insurance, she said 'why are you paying for health cover' seemed like a daft quesiton to me at the time! anyway, she told me , 'your not earning enough for that payment' she said , she would print off the forms and fill them out for me and we should get an attastation that entiltled us to free health cover , she did just that, we had to keep sending different documents mind you and i dont want you to think its easy as nothing in france is easy ! it took about 8 weeks and then the attestaiton arrived, ! now i have to pay nothing anywhere ! brilliant, ive photocopied it and carry it around with all the other necessary documents as its irreplaceable ! i bet there are litterally thousands of people here who are paying thousands they dont need to.
isabelle cost me about 150 euros to do that and other things and on just that alone i was able to get rid of a bill for 1,300 euroes straight off! i simply sent a copy of the attestation to the health cover people to prove i now had free CMU cover and they stopped taking money from the bank , becasue by the way when somebody has a standing order from your bank , only they can canel it ! its mad but true.
so for money saving id contact her for advice her email is isa.chevalier@neuf.fr her tel number is 0033 2 97 75 40 12 thats from outside france or 02 97 75 40 12
she also has young children and will guide you through the changing over of child benefit as its a much higher payment i believe than in britain.
i wish id known her when we came here, ive paid out thousands and thousands i didnt need to .
good luck billy

Re: healthcare in france
A biggy is 'Top Up Health Insurance' - I don't have any top up insurance and have save a fortune. My parents also do not have a top up in place and have saved a fortune in the few years they have lived here.

When you are in the system paying taxes etc. you get a basic cover which pays for 80% of pretty much any medical costs. 100% of major medical problems.

Top ups are to cover the 20% that is not covered. If you are healthy and do not need expensive glasses etc. a top up may not be required. I've just undergone some surgery (minor) in hospital and the bill was 130 Euros. All in I've maybe paid 160 Euros in the last 12 months, but never more than about 50 euros per annum in medical costs. If I had been on a top up I would have been paying 40 to 50 euros per month for 10 years which would be upto 6000 euros..... I've not paid more than 500 euros in medical costs in all that time!

Each case is different, perhaps if I was older I would benefit more from a top up...... Talk to Agence Eaton if you think a top up would be right for you: www.french-insurance.com - 0297 40 80 20
