Hi, We are considering selling up next Spring and moving to Brittany. We would need employment within 4 months of the move to France. We both do not speak any French, our children are 4 , 11 and 12 and do not speak any French. My Wife is a Civil Servant and I am a Housing Manager. We are both going to evening classes in order to learn French. Can you give an honest opinion please, are we barking mad, or is employment, kids in school and settling a valid option ???. My Wife is horse mad , so could possibly work with horses etc, I have many strings to my bow, but would prefer employment in Housing.
thanks,
Billy |

Billy, many Brits will give the bullsh*t answer and say its easy. Well it aint...UNLESS your ready to take anything you get offered. If you dont speak French you aint gonna get a nice office job....sorry but thats the fact. I HAD a office job in the UK but now work in a builders merchant with all French lads. This is my first job and I've been there over 3 years now. It wasnt a walk in the park, i did 18 months on a temp contract. My French WAS crap but its better now.
As for being mad, it helps. (",)
If this is what you want....DO IT. You only get 1 chance in life. Lets face it if you cock it up you can always go back to the UK. Hate me if you want but thats my opion.

ha ha ha , I love your honesty it is exactly what I wnated to hear. Well I never expected it to be a breeze anyway, and I have afew self employment ideas in my head as well. We must earn some income fairly early on, or we are sunk. It is too expensive here in Wales, and the lifestyle is crap. I think it best to cash in on our house and live aFamily life again, with good food and people who are not so self absorbed. Thanks for the reply.

Billy, Take a long hard look at self employment in France as it can be expensive. Lots of red tape, but with some help and a good French accountant you'll be OK. Go for it mate, make the leap. You'll love it. fusil
PS Its sunny and warm as I type.

Fusil,
I wish it was sunny and warm, as I type. Damp, coldish and generally depressing, I have got 2 weeks off looking after my kids, so I hope I get some sun. On another matter, is property affordable in Brittany ?, something that needs minor decorating, new kitchen etc.
cheers,

Fusil gave some excellent advice, and it is great here! However don't forget that the grass isn't always greener etc.... you'll have to work, at first maybe even harder than you ever have in the UK.
If it all pays off it's great living here!
Research your business ideas for the area you're going to move to.... no point moving somewhere where there aren't enough clients or there is too much competition etc.
If you haven't bought a property in Brittany yet take a look at http://www.breton-homes.com - they are now starting to display some private properties for sale in Brittany ie no agencies. |

Billy, Jules has hit the nail on the head (as per normal, he is a clever sod).
As for property, get yourself over as often as you can a look at lots of areas. Dont be afraid to go into French estate agents most speak English and are generaly very good. We used AVIS in Pontivy. Yes you pay the extra fee, but they sort everything out for us.
Good luck & happy house hunting.
