Pistol shooting in France
Hi

I've seen all sorts of pistols for sale in gun shops in my area. I'm told that to buy a black powder pistol you don't have to have a licence... is this true?

Cheers

Re: Pistol shooting in France
Hi

That's true Ardwork you do not need a license to buy a black powder revolver or rifle in France. Buying black powder, balls and caps is also unrestricted.

Many people such as myself bought their first hand gun in France as a black powder revolver, joined a local french shooting club and built up their shooting ticket to prove 6 months of shooting before upgrading to 9mm semi auto's 357 magnums etc.... :)

It's a great way to start out, but as a beginner be careful to not get powder burns on wrists etc. from the hot gases that will shoot out of the side of the revolver from the small gap between the Cylinder and the barrel!!!!! Also take care to put grease over the ends of the loaded cylinder to ensure you don't get flash back detonating an adjacent chamber. Though this bit is messy and a bit of a faff I'd hate to see what happens if an adjacent chamber goes off!

My black powder sits on display these days as I tend to stick to modern cartridge based pistols for shooting.

Re: Pistol shooting in France
Surely this isn't the only way to get into pistol shooting? I'm not a mad fan of black powder (I value my eyebrows, I guess), and was hoping to get my card via rifle shooting at my nearest club. Is this a valid path?

Re: Pistol shooting in France
Hi Tasso

Rifle shooting would be fine too. I find black powder a pain to shoot with - all that messing about and then greasing over the chambers - YUCK! Interesting a fund to do from time to time...

You only have to join the club and get a Carnet du Tir - Which is a piece of card that you have to get stamped at least 3 times per year after shooting, to keep your license up. (Many people start with a .22LR bolt action rifle) You will need three stamps on the carnet du tir before you can apply for a cat 4 or cat 1 pistol and the minimum time between stamps is two months. So 6 months of stamps and you're ready for the Avis Préalable from the gun club..... Then it's just a paperwork exercise in the local Gendermerie, followed by a wait of 1 to several months depending on which department you live in. Morbihan in Brittany takes about 4-8 weeks and the 22 takes about 4 months!

A+

Re: Pistol shooting in France
The only thing I don't like about the Black Powder revolvers is having to put the sodding greese over the chambers to stop crossfire.

IS IT ESSENTIAL? - Greesing chambers to stop Crossfire....

When I press a .44cal ball into the chambers of my black powder revolver it slices off a fine ring of lead.... surely this kind of snug fit would stop crossfire and adding greese is just a horrible messy waste of time?

Also many people over here use ground couscous as a wadding. They add enough of the couscous powder so that the ball is only just inside the cylinder and just clears the barrel........ surely flashback isn't going to get past the couscous and the lead ball......

If I didn't have to add greese I'd still fire my Black Powder revolver!!!!!!

Re: Pistol shooting in France
julian,
I dont use grease over the lead ball. I do use couscous as a packer and then add a greased paper wad (to help with fouling). Your right about the lead ring coming off the ball that should stop cross fires.
I have used a mix of lard and candle wax melted and allowed to set as a grease and thats a lot less messy. But now I use this mix to dip the paper wads into while its still liquid, put onto grease proof paper and left to cool.
Got the idea from a friend who shoots a .50 cal musket (now that makes a big bang).
