Registering a North American car
Can anyone offer advice on how to best register a North American vehicle in Brittany? Where do you have to take the car for an inspection. I keep hearing horror stories regarding 'conformity'?
The car was already registered in the UK. Thanks. Alex

Re: Registering a North American car
Hi

It can be a nightmare! A lot depends on if your cars make and model has ever been imported to France before.

If the car doesn't appear on the French Prefectures computer system and you can't get a certificate of conformity, you'll be in for a tough ride. You can get the vehicle inspected by DRIRE see their Brittany contact details: DRIRE Brittany which will allow it to be registered with their report which will work as a equivalent to a certificate of conformity.

If that's a no go a simple way of registering a vehicle in France is to register it under a 'Collection' registration. This is often used for classic cars that obviously came about before the european certificates of conformity. This is quite straight forward but will limit your use of the car in France to your department and each department around you. If you wish to travel further, you have to make a demand at the prefecture for permission.

I suggest the first step is to try the prefecture and see what they say, you could be lucky!

Good Luck
