  • Some 2 or 3 wheeled vehicles
  • Other vehicles (eg motorhomes)

Code (theoretical test)

Registration

The driving school will register you.

You can, if you wish, register yourself to pass the test in a centre approved by the State. You have to pay 30 € to take the exam. Your bank details will be requested at the end of the registration process.

Training

You can prepare for the code exam by attending a driving school or by yourself.

Examination

On the day of the event, you must bring a valid or expired identification document within the last 5 years.

You receive the results by post or e-mail the same day.

After obtaining the code, you must, within a maximum of 5 years from the date of obtaining the code, take the driving test.

During these 5 years, you are entitled to a maximum of 5 attempts to pass the practical test.

If you already have another driver's license (such as category A) which, includes the code and practical test, passed in the last 5 years, you only need to pass the practical driving test.

The benefit of the code remains acquired in the event of a change, either in the training sector or in the driving license category.

Notes:

There is no system of equivalence in France of a successful theoretical test in another country.

Specific sessions can be organized for candidates who have a physical disability or poor command of the French language.  To find out the dates of these sessions you should contact the prefecture.

Only candidates who have declared their disability or lack of fluency in their registration file may participate in these specific sessions.

Driving (practical test)

Training

It is possible to prepare for the examination of the license by following the courses of a driving school or by training with a relative (as an individual).

Depending on his age, it is possible to follow an apprenticeship:

in apprentissage anticipé (from 15 years) ,

in conduite encadrée  (16 to 18 years)

in  conduite supervisée  (18 years or older) .

Examination

The practical test assesses the following points:

  • compliance with the provisions of the Highway Code,
  • knowledge of the vehicle and the ability to detect the most important technical faults,
  • command and control of the vehicle,
  • ability to ensure your own safety and that of other users on any type of road, to perceive and anticipate hazards,
  • basic knowledge of first aid,
  • degree of autonomy in carrying out a journey,
  • ability to drive in an environmentally friendly manner and with courteous and considerate behaviour towards other users.

It lasts 32 minutes. Your examination documents are checked.

If you have completed apprentissage anticipé, your certificate is checked to ensure that you have complied with the minimum of one year of accompanied driving.

A sight test is performed. You are exempt if you have had a medical examination. In case of inconclusive test, the examiner reports the result of this test to the prefect for you to be summoned for a medical check.

The actual driving test, lasting at least 25 minutes, includes:

  • the verification of a technical element relating to road safety, inside and outside the vehicle,
  • two different manoeuvres: an emergency stop and a reversing manoeuvre (reverse in a straight line, parallel parking, parking in a car park space, 3 point turn ...).

To be accepted, you must obtain at least 20 points and not to make an eliminatory error (such as: crossing a continuous solid line, circulation on the left, ignoring stop signs ...).

The result of the practical test

At the end of the practical test, the inspector does not give you the result.

You can find out the result of your practical test 48 hours after taking the test online:

  • by downloading it online, or
  • by asking your driving school.

With an ID card, the CEPC serves as a driver's license for 4 months from the date of examination. In case of a police control, this certificate can be presented in paper version, on a Smartphone or a tablet.

You cannot drive outside of France with a CEPC

If it is your first license

You must contact your driving school to find out if they are submitting your driver's license application themselves or if it is up to you to do so. .

In most cases, during the 4 month period covered by the CEPC, the driver's license will be sent by post to your home.

Adding category B to your license

If you already have a motorcycle category (A, A1 or A2), you must add the new B to your driver's license.

Your driver’s license will be delivered by La Poste

Note:

if it is your 1st driver's license, it will be a probationary license and you will have to affix the distinctive young driver sign (commonly called sticker A ) to the rear of the vehicle.

Validity of the driving license

Category B of the driving license issued since September 2013 has a validity of 15 years.
